The law posits "premeditation" as a state of mind that involving forethought and planning. Premeditation in the commission of an unlawful act often leads to greater penalty and punishment.

From the contemplative tradition, this use of premeditation is a curious one.

But even a mindful approach might find the word curious.

After all, what is pre-meditation? To many, meditation is a process that can predate, or preempt thought. So pre meditation?

Rather than try to define it in this context, perhaps it can serve as a Koan we can bring into our meditation.
